Don’t miss Galentine’s Day this Year
The first time I heard about Galentine’s Day was from one of my office mates. She showed us what she got for her girlfriends for Galentine’s Day. I had never heard of Galentine’s day and asked her about it. She said that she and her friends get each other small “treat yourself” gifts to celebrate their friendship, and she has since extended this tradition to her sisters. She said it takes the pressure off Valentine’s Day since you know what your friends want, and often your significant other doesn't have a clue. She started this tradition a while back when she asked herself, “Why would I only celebrate Valentine’s Day when I also have so many other special people in my life?”. For her, Galentine’s Day is a way to honor and show compassion and kindness to other human beings and all the women who support her throughout the year.
For those of you who are “Parks and Recreation” fans, you probably already know about Galentine’s Day, but for those of you (like me) who have never watched the show, you may not have heard about Galentine’s Day before. In fact, it was just recently that I realized that Galentine’s Day was not invented by my friend, but was instead, introduced by one of the main characters from Parks and Recreation (Leslie Knope played by Amy Poehler) in a 2010 episode called “Galentine’s Day”.
The other day, my sister Joanne and I watched this episode. To my surprise, the only reference to Galentine’s Day was in the opening scene, where a group of ladies at a restaurant share breakfast and gifts. Leslie Knope exclaims, "Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.” Yet despite this brief introduction to Galentine’s Day that lasts only 1:40 minutes, Galentine’s is now recognized as a National Day and is celebrated by many women nationwide.
This shows you how much this concept of Galentine’s Day of friends celebrating friends resonated with women. So how can you get in on the fun? Here are 5 Ideas for celebrating Galentine’s Day!
