FUN GOALS FOR A YEAR TO REMEMBER!
As another year fades into the past and a new one stretches out before us, I can’t help but embrace this season of fresh beginnings. It’s a time to reflect, reset, and dream—and like many of you, I’ve been thinking about my goals for the months ahead.
Not long ago, I was having lunch with my daughter, who recently welcomed her first baby. When I asked her about her goals for the year, her answer was both simple and profound: “To be present and patient with myself and my baby, and to enjoy this new phase of life.” Her words struck a chord, reminding me that not all goals need to be about self-improvement or productivity. Some of the most meaningful goals are the ones that bring joy, connection, and unforgettable memories.
Last year, my own goals weren’t what you’d call traditional. I wanted to learn pickleball, visit Maine with my husband, and watch the eclipse with my family on my birthday. At the time, I worried these weren’t “serious” goals—but looking back, they were some of the most fulfilling moments of the year. These “fun goals” enriched my life and created memories I’ll treasure forever.
Here’s how to turn your fun goals into reality:
Treat Fun Goals Seriously Brainstorm activities that excite you, and write them down. Commit to them as intentionally as you do your work or fitness goals.
Make Fun Goals SMART Use the SMART method (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timed) to plan your fun goals. For example, instead of saying, “I want to hike at a national park,” make it SMART: “I want to take a weekend hike with my dog along the Appalachian Trail on April 1st. To prepare, I’ll research dog-friendly campsites, book a spot, and gather the necessary gear.”
Put Them on Your Calendar Schedule your fun goals. If they’re not on your calendar, they’ll likely stay on the back burner.
This year, I’ve set some fun goals I’m truly excited about:
Complete a paint-by-number project with my mom
Take a cake-decorating class with no expectations
Go cross-country skiing this winter
Try paddleboarding this summer
Travel often to New York to visit my new grandson
These goals aren’t about achievement or self-discipline. They’re about joy, connection, and trying new things—and they matter just as much as any career milestone.
So, what about you? What fun goals will you set this year? Whether it’s learning a new hobby, planning a memorable trip, or simply spending quality time with loved ones, I challenge you to embrace your fun goals with intention and without guilt. Plan them, savour them, and make them happen.
Let’s make this a year of fun, fulfilment, and unforgettable moments. I can’t wait to hear about your fun goals!
